With the threat of the Garlean invasion over, the leaders of the Eorzean city-states declare the beginning of a new Era and hail the player character as a Warrior of Light. In retaliation, the city-states of Eorzea have the player character assault the base where the Ultima Weapon is housed and destroy it. Meanwhile, the XIVth Imperial Legion of the Garlean Empire launches their campaign to conquer Eorzea, deploying the Ultima Weapon to crush all resistance. The Scions oppose Primal summoning as it drains the land of vitality, and Primals can irreversibly enslave others to their will. The Ascians are enabling beastman tribes to summon Primals - avatars of their gods. They also learn that their visions, known as the Echo, are a blessing from the goddess Hydaelyn. Eventually, the player character is inducted into the Scions themselves and investigates the black robes, called Ascians. Plagued by mysterious visions, they complete questlines to build up their reputation, all while continually encountering masked men in black robes and a mysterious figure who identifies themselves as a member of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn.
